Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Fusion Treatment in Hackensack, NJ

Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Fusion Treatment in Hackensack, NJ

The sacroiliac joint (SI joint) is located in the lower back where the bones of the spine just above the tailbone (the sacrum) meet up with the bones of the pelvis (the ileus). The SI joint is responsible for stability of the pelvis and transfers weight from the upper body to the legs and feet.

According to The Orthopedic Institute, about 85% of adults will suffer from Lower back pain  at some point in their lives and about 30% of these have pain that comes from the SI joint.

SI Joint Pain Causes

Pain from the SI joint can start for a variety of reasons, and is usually worse in the buttocks. Pain may radiate into the groin or even the leg. Causes of SI joint pain include:

Most doctors will try to treat SI joint pain with conservative methods first, then move to surgery if needed. SI joint fusion surgery stabilizes the bones of the pelvis and spine to reduce pain and improve quality of life.

SI Joint Fusion Surgery

Today's SI joint fusion technology makes treating SI joint pain easier than ever before. To stabilize the joint and stop pain, most healthcare providers use a minimally invasive approach. This means your provider will make the smallest incisions possible and use advanced tools to treat the area without making large cuts to the back or buttocks.

Minimally Invasive SI Joint Fusion

Minimally invasive  SI joint fusion offers many benefits including:

  • Minimal blood loss
  • Less trauma to muscles and surrounding tissue
  • Shorter healing time
  • Less recovery pain

SI joint fusion surgery takes about an hour and you may need to stay in the hospital overnight.

SI joint fusions stop pain by stabilizing the movement of the sacroiliac joint. To do this, your provider will make a small, two-inch incision in the side of the buttock just over the SI joint. He or she will then insert three small rods through the joint.

The bones of the SI joint will grow around these rods and use them to stabilize the area.

SI Joint Fusion Surgery Recovery

After your SI joint fusion, you will need several weeks to put all of your weight back on your feet. For the first four weeks after your procedure you may need to use a walker. From there you may need another month of light walking where your toes gently bear part of your weight. Finally, you will need about 4 weeks of physical therapy to regain full weight-bearing abilities.

Even with the long recovery, many patients reported their previous pain was gone or nearly gone. A study published in the journal Advances in Orthopedics  reported that out of 40 patients, no one needed additional surgery and that overall satisfaction with the surgery was very high.
