Axial Lumbar Interbody Fusion (Axial LIF) Surgery in Midland Park, NJ

Axial Lumbar Interbody Fusion (Axial LIF) in Midland Park, NJ

Axial LIF or lumbar interbody fusion surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows surgeons to fuse the last bone in the lumbar spine (low back) to the first bone in the sacrum — a part of the pelvis.

The Axial Lumbar Interbody Fusion surgery is used to treat back pain, nerve compression , joint instability and other health problems that affect this area of the spine.

Interbody Fusion Procedures

With any interbody fusion procedure, your provider will be removing the cushioning disc between two bones of the spine (vertebrae) and replacing it with a bone graft. This bone graft will support the growth of new bone that will grow together over time and join the two vertebrae together.

Most interbody fusion surgeries require surgeons to reach the spine through the back, side or front of the body. Many of these surgeries require the doctor to cut through ligaments, muscles and other tissues to reach the treatment area. Axial LIF has a different approach.

Axial Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery

To complete your Axial LIF, your doctor will make a small incision next to your tailbone. Your tailbone is located directly below your sacrum and will make it easy for your provider to reach the treatment area.

Through the incision, your provider will create a tunnel that he or she will use to remove damaged disc sections and replace them with the bone graft material. A metal support rod is also placed to stabilize the area.

One of the biggest differences between Axial LIF and other interbody fusion surgeries  is that only portions of the disc are removed during Axial LIF. Your provider will replace the damaged sections that are causing your symptoms and replace it with grafting material, but leave healthy parts of the disc intact.

Axial LIF Benefits

Axial LIF is a good choice for patients who have complications, physical disabilities or other health problems that would make a traditional surgical approach difficult or impossible.

The angle used to complete the surgery reduces damage to muscle and other supporting structures so you heal faster and have less pain compared to other techniques.

You may not be a candidate for Axial LIF if you have compressed nerves in the area or scar tissue in or around your tailbone or sacrum. Your provider will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
