Endoscopic Discectomy in Midland Park, NJ

Endoscopic Discectomy in Midland Park, NJ

Endoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive surgery used to remove herniated disc  tissue that is pressing on nerves, causing pinched nerves and severe pain. You may feel this pain as lower back  or leg pain.

If your pain is not relieved with non-surgical treatments, you may need an endoscopic discectomy. Endoscopy allows doctors to perform the procedure easily and with less risk of bleeding, pain, or damage to surrounding tissue. Most patients who have the surgery will go home the same day.

Endoscopic Discectomy Procedure

  • To start, you will be given local anesthesia. This means you will be numbed in the area where your provider is working or you may not be completely asleep.
  • Your provider will make a small incision in your back near the area of the disc and a small guide wire will be directed to the disc using special X-ray  technology called fluoroscopy.
  • Once the wire is in place, a series of tubes are passed down over the wire to widen the work area. These are replaced with one final tube that creates a tunnel. Remember no muscles are cut during the surgery.
  • Next, your provider will use a camera with bright light and other tools to make a small hole through the vertebrae to reach the nerve. The nerve is gently moved to the side and the area of bulging disc tissue is removed. This tissue comes from the soft center of the disc. The outside “walls” that support the disc remain in place.
  • This causes the disc to shrink back into its normal position and makes room for the nerve. The nerve is gently placed back into its normal position.
  • Once the procedure is over, the tools are removed and the area is closed with a bandage. The incision site is very small—about the size of a freckle and won't even need stitches.
  • The surgery takes about an hour, and you will be able to go home once you have recovered from any medications.

Endoscopic Discectomy Recovery

You may be able to return to light duty work in 1-2 weeks, depending on your job and your provider's instructions. Everyone's case will be different, so make sure to talk with your provider before surgery to be sure.
