Hip Arthroscopy in Midland Park, NJ

Hip Arthroscopy in Midland Park, NJ

Unexplained hip pain can be worrisome. One method to help identify an issue in your hip is through a hip arthroscopy. With the help of a fiber optic camera called an arthroscope, your healthcare provider can view the condition of the cartilage, tendons, and ligaments in your hip. It can be an effective way to diagnose conditions that don't appear through other methods such as physical exams and x-rays.

Hip Arthroscopy for Surgery

In addition to being an invaluable medical diagnostic tool, an arthroscopy can be used to perform surgery on a number of hip-related conditions to improve your quality of life. A hip arthroscopy has the potential to:

  • Relieve pain
  • Improve stability in the legs
  • Remove loose debris and scar tissue in the hip joint
  • Repair a labral tear or hip impingement
  • Remove excess articular cartilage
  • Delay arthritis
  • Delay the need for a total hip replacement

What to Expect from Hip Arthroscopy Surgery

Arthroscopic surgery is an outpatient procedure that generally lasts between 30 minutes and two hours. Before the treatment commences, you will receive either a local anesthetic to numb the area or a general anesthesia causing you to be unconscious during the treatment.

Once the anesthesia has been applied, 2-3 small incisions will be made in your hip joint no larger than ¼ of an inch. In one of these small incisions the arthroscope tool is inserted. This provides an image for the surgeon to work off of during the hip arthroscopy procedure. The surgeon will use the other incisions to insert his surgical tools and perform the hip arthroscopy. Saline is injected into the joint to expand the area surrounding the joint and improve visualization throughout the procedure. Once the procedure is completed, all cuts will be repaired with stitches.

Following Your Hip Arthroscopy

Because a hip arthroscopy is a minimally-invasive procedure, you can expect a relatively quick recovery time. To ensure that the healing process is as comfortable as possible, your healthcare provider may recommend the following:

  • Medications such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs
  • R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compress, elevate)
  • Crutches
  • Physical therapy
