Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery in Midland Park, NJ

Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion in Midland Park, NJ

Lateral lumbar interbody fusion is a type of spinal fusion  surgery. Spinal fusions are often used to stabilize two bones of the spine (vertebrae).  Your provider may recommend a lateral lumbar interbody fusion if you have low back pain  and you've been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. The procedure is also called an extreme lateral lumbar fusion, or XLIF .

Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion Benefits

Lateral lumbar interbody fusion is an alternative to traditional invasive surgery. This technique allows your provider to make two small incisions in your side or flank. Entering through the side is called a "lateral position".

A lateral approach will allow your provider to avoid cutting through the muscles of the back, and helps reduce injury, bleeding, and pain after surgery. This technique also allows providers to identify nerves and avoid them. This reduces the risk of damage or injury that could cause pain after surgery.

Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery

To start, you will be given general anesthesia and put to sleep. Then you are positioned on your side and the head and foot sections of the bed are lowered slightly so that your side is easier to reach.

Your surgeon will make two small incisions in your side. One is for a probe that will move forward carefully looking for nerves and avoiding delicate structures until it reaches the proper place in your spine. The second cut is to place tools that will help during the surgery.

Once your provider reaches the spine, larger covers will be slipped over the probe and they will be used to enlarge the work area slightly.

A spreader will be used to gently open the muscles around the spine and create a tunnel for your provider to work through.

Next, the area of damaged disc will be removed. Your provider will probably only remove the softer center section and may leave the "walls" of your original disc in place. The empty center will be replaced with a bone graft material.

Over time, bone will grow over the graft and join the two vertebrae above it and below it together.

Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion Recovery

Once the surgery is over, you will be stitched up. Depending on what bones needed to be fused and how severe the problem was, you may be in the hospital from a day to a week.

Many patients notice relief from their back pain very soon after surgery.

You should be able to return to most of your regular activities in a few months.
