Spinal Decompression Procedures in Midland Park, NJ

Pinched nerves lead to an extreme amount of pain, especially when they are present in the spine. Lumbar spine decompression refers to several orthopedic  surgical procedures designed to alleviate this pain.

Lumbar decompression back surgery is sometimes known as spinal decompression. Spinal decompression is used to reduce pain, restore movement range and boost quality of life. Request more information about lumbar spine decompression today: call (201) 806-6099 or contact Dr. M.T. Shahab online.

What is Lumbar Spine Decompression?

Lumbar spine decompression is used to treat back pain caused by pinched nerves in the spine. A pinched nerve refers to any nerve that is under pressure, usually from being pressed against a ruptured disc or bone growth, degenerative disc disease and other spinal problems. Symptoms of a damaged spinal cord or nerve include:

  • Reduced mobility
  • Weakness
  • Tingling
  • Intense pain
  • Dull pain

This often manifests as lower back pain , but pinched nerves can occur anywhere along the spine. All the different forms of lumbar spine decompression work by relieving the tension that is causing pain. This typically involves removing a part of the bone or spinal disc that is pressing against the nerve. This gives the nerve more room and allows healing to occur.

How Does Lumbar Spine Decompression Work?

The exact method of lumbar spinal decompression will vary depending on the root cause of the spinal pain. The most common types of lumbar spine decompression include:

  • Microdiscectomy: This surgery, also known as a microdecompression, is most commonly used to address lumbar pain that originates with a herniated disc. During a microdiscectomy, the herniated disc material is removed while leaving all joints, ligaments and muscles intact. Microdiscectomy is often used to treat sciatica as well, which refers to leg pain that originates in the lower back.
  • Laminectomy: A laminectomy is performed most commonly to address lumbar spinal stenosis. This treatment is sometimes known as an open decompression. During the surgery, a portion of the spine known as the lamina is removed; this allows the surgeon to better view and diagnose the nerve roots. Once the roots are visible, the facet joints that are causing pain can be trimmed to remove pressure from the spinal nerves. If just a portion of the lamina is removed instead, this is known as a laminotomy.
  • Foraminotomy: This procedure is very similar to a laminectomy, only the foramina (the passages through the bones of the vertebrae) are removed rather than the lamina. A Foraminotomy is most often performed in a minimally-invasive way and used to treat foraminal stenosis.

These are merely the most common types of spinal decompression. Other alternatives include corpectomy and the use of spinal spacers.
