Orthotics - Podiatrist in Arlington, TX
A custom orthotic is used to support your foot while providing comfort. It differs from over-the-counter shoe inserts, because they are prescribed by a doctor, and are tailor-made to conform to the unique shape of your foot. Orthotics are also made from durable materials, designed to last for years. They can be prescribed for adults as well as children.
Prescription orthotics can correct the way you walk (gait), improve problems with the feet (foot pathology), and relieve discomfort that comes from problems with your muscles and bones (biomechanical foot problems).
If you are suffering from any of these conditions, and would like to meet with a doctor, please call (817) 203-2760 or contact The New You Medical & Infusion Clinic online.
Types of Orthotics
There are two main types of custom orthotics: Function and Accommodative.
- Function orthotics: This style of orthotic is made from a rigid material such as plastic or graphite. They serve the purpose of limiting unusual motion in your feet to improve conditions such as shin splints or tendinitis.
- Accommodative orthotics: These orthotics are softer and provide cushioning for the foot. They are prescribed to treat ailments such as diabetic foot ulcers and painful calluses.
Orthotics for Foot Pain
There are numerous other foot disorders that can be corrected or improved with custom orthotics. Some of them include:
- Plantar fasciitis : Heel pain due to an inflamed ligament
- Bursitis: Pain in the heel or big toe caused by inflamed bursae
- Tendonitis : Pain from an inflamed tendon
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Foot, ankle, and heel pain
Creating Prescription Orthotics
Your doctor may perform a number of tests to properly diagnose your condition. This will also allow them to prescribe the correct form of orthotic. These tests begin with a consultation to discuss the symptoms you have been experiencing. Your doctor will then examine your feet, ankles, and legs. You will most likely be asked to walk or run so that the doctor can perform a gait analysis to study the way that you move.
Your orthotics will be made from three-dimensional images and measurements taken of your feet. These can be derived from plaster casts, foam casts, or they may be digitally scanned.
Relieve Your Pain Today
There are a number of over-the-counter shoe inserts on the market that are advertised to correct conditions such as flat feet and heel pain. However, shoe inserts are not orthotics. They can provide a minimal amount of comfort and support, but serious foot problems should be diagnosed and treated by an experienced doctor.
