Arthroscopy in Waldwick, NJ

Arthroscopy in Waldwick, NJ

With the help of a fiber optic camera called an arthroscope, doctors can view the condition of the cartilage, tendons, and ligaments in your joints with a minimally invasive procedure known as arthroscopy. It can be an effective way to diagnose conditions that don't appear through other methods such as physical exams and x-rays .

If you've been experiencing lingering joint pain, please call (201) 806-6099 or contact Dr. M.T. Shahab online.

Arthroscopy for Diagnosis and Surgery

Arthroscopy is used to examine the following joints:

  • Knees
  • Shoulders
  • Elbows
  • Ankles
  • Hips
  • Wrists

Arthroscopy can also be used to perform surgery on a number of conditions related to the joints. By requiring a button-sized incision no larger than 1/4 of an inch, it can be completed as an outpatient procedure. You will also experience a much quicker recovery time than traditional surgical methods. Some of the conditions arthroscopy can improve include:

  • Bone spurs
  • Injured cartilage
  • Ligament or tendon tears
  • Inflammation
  • Infection
  • Scar tissue from past injuries

What to Expect From Arthroscopic Surgery

Arthroscopic surgery is an outpatient procedure that generally lasts between 30 minutes and two hours. Before the treatment commences, you will receive either a local anesthetic to numb the area or a general anesthesia causing you to be unconscious during the treatment.

After the area is numbed, a 1/4 of an inch incision will be made, and your doctor will insert the arthroscope. Sterile fluid is also injected into the site to expand the area surrounding the joint which makes it easier to spot injuries.

Two or more additional incisions may be made for the purpose of inserting surgeon's tools. None of these will be any larger than 1/4 of an inch. Once the procedure is completed, all cuts will be repaired with stitches.

Following Your Arthroscopy

Because arthroscopy is a minimally invasive treatment, you can expect a relatively quick recovery time. To ensure that the healing process is as comfortable as possible, your doctor may recommend some of the following:

  • Medications such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs
  • R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compress, elevate)
  • Splints, slings, or crutches
  • Exercise

How Arthroscopy can Help

Arthroscopy serves the dual function of diagnosing conditions that cannot be found by other methods, and then correcting them with a minimally invasive procedure. If you've been suffering from chronic pain, arthroscopy can be a safe and effective way to treat your condition. Please call (201) 806-6099 or contact Dr. M.T. Shahab online.
