Treatment of Adult Fractures in Wilkesboro, NC

Adult Fractures in Wilkesboro, NC

A broken bone (fracture) can happen at any time in your life, and it typically results from some form of trauma. It can occur from a sports injury  or car accident, but it most typically happens when you fall down.

A fractured bone should be treated as soon as possible to ensure it heals properly. If you believe you're dealing with the fallout from a broken bone, please call (423) 482-8711 or contact Dr. Dalal Akoury online.

Signs of a Broken Bone

The signs of a severe fracture are obvious. If there is a clearly visible deformity, the bone has broken through the skin, or you experience pain from even the slightest movement, an immediate trip to the emergency room is required.

Sometimes the signs of a broken bone are less obvious. Symptoms to be aware of include:

  • Tenderness
  • Stiffness
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration
  • Numbness

If you notice any of these symptoms following a fall or injury, please call (423) 482-8711 or contact Dr. Dalal Akoury online.

Diagnosing and Treating a Fractured Bone

The first thing your doctor will do to determine if you have a broken bone is to perform a physical exam to pinpoint areas of pain or tenderness. This will be followed with an x-ray, CT scan, or MRI to get an internal look at the injury.

If a break occurred, the bone will be moved back into place, a process known as resetting the fracture or fracture reduction. In most cases, this can be done by hand without the need for surgery. Severely misaligned bones, however, may require the use of pins, plates or screws to hold them in place.

Once the bones have been reset, the recovery stage begins. As the bones heal, your doctor will recommend the following:

  • Immobilization of the injury with the use of casts, splints or slings
  • Medication to reduce pain and swelling
  • Rest, ice, compress, and elevation (R.I.C.E.)
  • Physical therapy to rebuild strength and flexibility in the bones, muscles, and joints

Preventing Fractures

It may not seem possible, but there are ways to decrease your chances of breaking a bone. This is because your likelihood of breaking a bone increases as you get older due to a loss of bone density, a condition known as osteoporosis . Your doctor can teach you ways to slow the effects of osteoporosis with a combination of targeted exercises and calcium-rich diet plans.

Osteoporosis and injuries related to it become a serious factor if you are older than age 65. To offset the likelihood of injury, your doctor can make recommendations about how to eliminate falling hazards from your home. They can check your eyesight for visual impairments and monitor any medications you're taking that diminish motor skills.

If you are dealing with the effects of osteoporosis, or if you simply want to learn ways to prevent it, please call (423) 482-8711 or contact Dr. Dalal Akoury online.
